Kami Sid's 'Rani' set to premiere at KLF in March
KARACHI: Rani, a Pakistani short film starring transgender model and activist Kami Sid, will be premiering on March 3 at the 10th Karachi Literature Festival, confirmed GrayScale CEO Akbar Allana.
Rani is a unique story about a transgender Pakistani woman who sets out to take care of an abandoned baby. Set in the heart of Karachi, Pakistan she faces many challenges, yet is determined to do the right thing.
The film has won the Outstanding Writer Award at the NBC Universal Short Film Festival, the Fox Inclusion Award at Outfest LA, an Ursula gender bender award for Best Short Film at Lesbisch Schwule Filmtage Hamburg | International Queer Film Festival, and has screened at numerous international festivals including Newport Beach Film Festival, Rhode Island Film Festival, New York Asian American Film Festival, Seattle Tasveer, CAAMFEST, and many more.
The film is scheduled to have its Pakistani Premiere on 03rd March 2019, at the tenth Karachi Literature Festival, and is the first Pakistani film to be featured on internet streaming giant Hulu. It will also be screened on 10th March at the Dorab Patel Auditorium of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, hosted by Lahore Biennale Foundation, and at select universities, colleges, and cultural centres across Pakistan.
After filming, the lead actress Kami Sid became Pakistan’s first trans model. She is an equal rights leader and ambassador for the region’s LGBTQ community.
Hammad Rizvi is a Pakistani-American writer and director, currently working in Los Angeles. Having lived in various parts of the world, his films often tackle topics that are as diverse as they are raw. Hammad holds an MFA from UT-Austin and is working towards his first feature film.
Other cast includes Hina Pathani & Maaz Khan. The film has been produced by Akbar Allana and Sara Siddiqi.
Rani is a co-production between Rizvilia Productions in the US, and GrayScale in Pakistan.
The film is 14 minutes long, and will be followed by a panel discussion between Hammad Rizvi, Kami Sid, Akbar Allana and a moderator. For the screening at Karachi Literature Festival, Mrs. Bilquis Edhi is a special guest panelist.
